Former Tip, Camborne

A former undeveloped corner of a residential area which had suffered from unregulated tipping leading to extensive contamination by asbestos insulation materials and fibres.

Initial ground investigations by others failed to identify the presence and distribution of both cement bound asbestos materials distributed throughout made ground materials at the surface, as well as fibrous asbestos materials within the soils.

After the client had acquired the site, the extent of the contamination became evident.  It was clear that numerous episodes of historic investigations on the site caused cross contamination by mixing flock and asbestos fibres throughout made ground soils. Red Rock were called in based on their expertise in dealing with similar sites, and extensive investigation strategies were employed to better constrain the extent of asbestos contamination affecting the site.

Working closely with the clients cut and fill model, Red Rock were able to devise a remediation strategy with selective soil treatment and removal which allowed retention of materials in low risk areas, representing significant cost savings to the client and limiting transport costs.  Long term liabilities were managed by careful soil management plans, thereby reducing the client’s future risks.
